Wade McClurg, Club President & Head Coach
Wade McClurg is entering his 5th season as Head Wrestling Coach at Roncalli High School. Coach McClurg is looking to build off the success that Roncalli has experienced in his first 4 seasons leading the program- 69-13 Dual Meet Record, 4x Conference Champions, 1x Sectional Champions, 1x Semi-State Champions, 15 IHSAA State Finalists, 13 IHSAA State Medalists, 3 IHSAA State Champions & 2 IHSAA State Runner Ups (4 straight years had at least one athlete in the State Championship Match), 24 Academic All-State Selections, IHSWCA 3A Team State Duals 7th in 2018 & 6th in 2019 & 9th in 2020, IHSAA Team State Finals 17th in 2017 & 8th in 2018 & 6th in 2019 & 5th in 2020, multiple regular season tournament championships, and numerous wrestlers have gone on to wrestle in college.
Last season, McClurg and his staff lead Roncalli to a 19-3 regular season dual meet record, finished the season ranked 7th in the state. The team was Conference Champions, 9th Place at the IHSWCA Team State Duals, Sectional Runner-Ups, Regional Third Place, Semi-State Third Place, and at the State Finals they finished in 5th place (the eighth Top 10 State Finals finish in the program’s history). In a season full of team accomplishments, at the IHSAA State Finals Roncalli had 4 IHSAA State Finalists. Brayden Lowery was State Champion at 126 lbs, Alec Viduya became the school’s first two-time State Champion by winning at 145 lbs, Bryce Lowery finished 4th place at 106 lbs, and Sam Slivka was a Qualifier at 132 lbs.
McClurg is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach. He is the President and Head Coach of the wrestling club, Roncalli Wrestling Foundation. Roncalli Wrestling Foundation has consistently had numerous athletes competing and doing very well at the local, state, regional, and national levels. Has been a member of the Indiana State Wrestling Association’s National Team Staff since 2008. McClurg was selected by his peers the 2013 ISWA Coach of the Year.
McClurg had served as an Assistant Coach for 8 years. He worked with many of the state and country’s best athletes from 2008-2013 as an Assistant Coach at a club called Central Indiana Academy of Wrestling. Then, McClurg took his talents to Carmel High School from 2013-2016 where he mentored 7 State Finalists, 3 State Medalists, and the team was 2x Sectional and 2x Regional Champions. Coach McClurg also played a large role in helping build Carmel USA Wrestling Club into one of the biggest and best clubs in the state during his time spent there from 2013-2016.
A 2008 graduate of Beech Grove High School, he then continued his education at the University of Indianapolis and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Coach and his wife Ashley (Roncalli Alumni ’08) reside in Franklin Township, are parishioners at St. Roch, they have a daughter Adelynn Grace, and have a Goldendoodle named Bear.
Bryce Martin, Head Assistant Coach
Bryce Martin is entering his 2nd year as Head Assistant Coach for the Roncalli Wrestling program. Coach Martin has brought a high-level mentality and strong work-ethic to our entire wrestling team at Roncalli, and he works very closely with our middleweights. Coach Martin is also actively involved in working with our youth and middle school wrestling programs at Roncalli Wrestling Foundation and is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach. Coach Martin wrestled for Bakersfield High School in California, where he was a four-time varsity letter winner. He was a four-time League Champion, a two-time Divisional Champion, and a two-time State Medalist finishing 4th as a Junior and 2nd his senior year. During his prep career he earned the following honors: USAW Junior Freestyle All-American, USAW Folkstyle All-American, NHSCA All-American. After high school, Coach Martin wrestled at Indiana University where he started all 4 years for the Hoosiers. Martin was a two-time Big Ten Championships Place Winner, as well as a two-time NCAA Division 1 Championships Qualifier, compiling a career record of 89-52. Coach Martin works as a school teacher, and his wife Morgan is currently attending graduate school at Indiana University.
Riley McClurg, Assistant Coach
Coach Riley McClurg is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach that has been deeply involved with the sport of wrestling his entire life. McClurg is the son of Jeff and Apryl McClurg, and he has two older brothers Kyle and Wade. After 4-knee surgeries and a career ending spinal fusion in 2017 that forced Riley to walk away from competition for life, McClurg discovered his love and passion for coaching the sport of wrestling. Riley has been an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Roncalli High School and Roncalli Wrestling Foundation from 2016-present, and was previously the Owner/Head Coach of The Indy Speed Wrestling Factory for one year in 2019. McClurg has been a member of the Indiana State Wrestling Association’s National Team Staff since 2017, and this includes the role of Assistant Team Leader for the 2018 Schoolboy Duals. Riley graduated from Perry Meridian High School in 2013, and then received his B.S. in Management from the Byrum School of Business at Marian University in 2018. McClurg currently resides on the southside of Indianapolis. Coach McClurg loves to spend time with his family, friends, and play golf when the weather is permitting.
High School Wrestling Accomplishments: Career record of 141-17, 2013 IHSAA State Champion (160lbs), 2013 IHSAA Sectional & Regional & Semi-State Champion, 2x IHSAA Team State Champion (’12 & ’13), 2x AAU National Team Dual Champions (’11 & ’12), 2x AAU All-American (’11 & ’12)
College Wrestling Accomplishments: Career record of 21-9. Wrestled under 1990-91 NCAA Division 1 All-American and former wrestler of Dan Gable, Steve Martin, at Old Dominion University. During the off-season, McClurg and teammates would travel with Coach Steve Martin implementing the Granby School of Wrestling. Spent his first season wrestling at Purdue in the Big Ten, then transferred to ODU and wrestled there for three years, and then spent his final season at Marian University in Indianapolis, IN under head coach, Steven Bradley.
High School Coaching Accomplishments: Has been instrumental in our 69 dual meet wins as an Assistant Coach these past four seasons. Mentored 15 IHSAA State Qualifiers, 13 IHSAA State Place Winners, 2 IHSAA State Runner-Ups, 3 IHSAA State Champions, IHSAA Team State Finishes 8th – 2018 & 6th – 2019 & 5th – 2020, IHSWCA 3A State Duals 7th – 2018 & 6th – 2019 & 9th – 2020, 2017 IHSAA Sectional Championship Team, 2019 IHSAA Semi-State Championship Team, 2017 & 2018 & 2019 & 2020 Circle City Conference Champion Team.
Jacob Blackwell, Assistant Coach
Coach Blackwell is entering his 7th season as an Assistant Coach for the Roncalli Wrestling program. Coach Jacob Blackwell has been crucial in all of the recent success that Roncalli has experienced at all levels in the program, but specifically he has played a large role in the development our upperweights. Jacob is a 2008 Roncalli graduate. He wrestled at Roncalli all four years. He earned three varsity wrestling letters and qualified for semi-state twice. He finished his high school career with a 3rd place finish at the IHSAA State Finals, during his senior year in 2008. After high school Jacob wrestled for the Greyhounds of UIndy. Most recently, Jacob served his country as in the active duty Navy. He currently resides in Indianapolis, a parishioner at Holy Name, he works as a firefighter for the Indianapolis Fire Department. Coach Blackwell also coaches at the club level for the Roncalli Wrestling Foundation, and is a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach.
Jake Jones, Assistant Coach
Jake Jones is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the Roncalli wrestling program. Jones has been involved in wrestling for the last 35 years in the Indianapolis and surrounding areas. He graduated from Decatur Central and is a Production Supervisor at Allison Transmission. His wife Melissa is a Physician Assistant at Urology of Indiana. They have two boys, Dalton and Declan, and both will be wrestling for the Roncalli Wrestling Foundation and St. Barnabas this season. His family currently resides in Plainfield.
Jake has worked in three high school programs…Cascade, Speedway, and most recently at Plainfield. At each of these schools, Jake was instrumental in developing and mentoring 11 IHSAA State Finalists and 6 IHSAA State Medalists. He is also involved at the club level for the Roncalli Wrestling Foundation and is a USA Wrestling Copper and Bronze Certified Coach.
